Last updated: 2 October 2026. These are the terms for using QuietCast, the iPhone app from Quietly Useful. Installing or using the app means accepting them.
QuietCast is published by Jacob Eells, trading as Quietly Useful, based in Somerset, United Kingdom. Enquiries and complaints go to the contact form.
What QuietCast is
QuietCast is a player for media servers you run yourself. It ships with no content whatsoever: no music, no audiobooks, no podcasts, and no catalogue or directory to find any. It cannot play anything until you connect a server of your own and sign in to it.
What it costs
QuietCast is free to download. Connecting your servers and streaming everything on them is free, with no time limit. There are no adverts, no subscriptions and no accounts with Quietly Useful.
QuietCast Pro is an optional purchase. It adds downloads without limit, automatic downloads of new podcast episodes, and browsing your whole library from CarPlay. Your first three downloads are free, so you can try downloading with your own server before deciding.
- Bought once. QuietCast Pro is a single purchase at the price shown in the app before you buy. It is not a subscription and it does not renew.
- Bought from Apple. The purchase is made through Apple’s App Store with your Apple Account. Apple takes the payment, under Apple’s own terms; Quietly Useful never sees your payment details.
- Yours on your devices. QuietCast Pro belongs to the Apple Account that bought it. Restore purchase in the app brings it back on a new or reset iPhone at no charge. Where Apple offers Family Sharing for it, members of your family group can use it too.
- Refunds. Refunds are requested from Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com. If a purchase is refunded, QuietCast Pro is switched off again. Anything already downloaded stays on your device and keeps playing.
Your licence
You get a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use QuietCast on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in Apple’s App Store Terms of Service. You may not sell, rent or sublicense the app, or attempt to extract its source code except to the extent the law allows you to regardless of this restriction.
Your servers and your content
You choose which servers QuietCast connects to and you are responsible for them: for running them, for securing them, and for holding the rights to whatever you store on them. Quietly Useful has no access to your servers, no way to see what is on them, and no involvement in what you play.
Do not use QuietCast to play material you do not have the right to play.
Other people’s software
Navidrome and Audiobookshelf are independent open-source projects. QuietCast is a third-party client for both and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or produced by either. Their names and marks belong to their respective owners and are used here only to say what QuietCast is compatible with.
Those projects set their own terms, change at their own pace, and may alter or remove the interfaces QuietCast relies on. Where using QuietCast means agreeing to a third party’s terms, you are responsible for keeping to them.
What is not promised
QuietCast is provided as it is. It is not promised to be uninterrupted or error-free, to be compatible with every server version or configuration, or to keep working if a server project changes. Downloads and playback positions are held on your device and can be lost if the app is deleted or the device is reset; your audio remains on your own server, which is where the durable copy lives.
To the extent the law permits, Quietly Useful is not liable for loss or damage arising from using the app, including lost data, lost listening positions, or a server becoming unreachable. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.
If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under UK consumer law, including your rights in relation to anything you have paid for.
Privacy
QuietCast collects nothing about you. What is stored, where it is stored, and the little that is sent to your own servers are all set out in the privacy policy, which forms part of these terms.
Support
Support is provided by Quietly Useful alone, through the contact form. There is no service level attached to it, and no obligation to add a feature, keep a feature, or support a particular server version.
Your agreement is with Quietly Useful, not Apple
These terms are between you and Quietly Useful only. Apple is not a party to them, and Quietly Useful, not Apple, is solely responsible for QuietCast and its contents.
- Support. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for QuietCast.
- Warranty. Any warranty is Quietly Useful’s responsibility. If QuietCast fails to conform to a warranty that applies, you may tell Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any; beyond that refund, Apple has no warranty obligation at all.
- Claims about the app. Quietly Useful, not Apple, is responsible for handling any claim that QuietCast fails to conform to a legal requirement, causes loss, or breaches consumer protection or privacy law.
- Intellectual property. If anyone claims QuietCast infringes their intellectual property, Quietly Useful, not Apple, is responsible for investigating and defending that claim.
- Legal compliance. By using QuietCast you confirm you are not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as supporting terrorism, and that you are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
Changes and governing law
These terms may be updated as the app changes; the date at the top always reflects the most recent version. They are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction, which does not deprive a consumer of the protection of the law where they live.
